Selvedge, also spelled ‘selvage,’ is a term used in the denim industry to describe a specific weaving technique. The term comes from the contraction of the words ‘self’ and ‘edge.’ Selvedge refers to the finishing of the fabric’s edge, which is typically woven in a way that creates a denser and more durable strip along the edges of the denim.
Traditionally, selvedge is produced on shuttle looms, which use a shuttle to pass the weft yarn through the warp yarns of the weaving machine. This process creates a clean finish on the fabric’s edges, usually marked by a distinctive colored band. This band is often adorned with patterns or lettering that identifies the manufacturer or brand of the denim.
